I'm thrilled to share the exciting news of gallery representation with the incredible Jessica Lloyd-Smith and Modern Art Buyer—an esteemed online art gallery and art consultancy located just outside Bath. Following Modern Art Buyer since my return to the UK, this feels like a dream come true. My initial encounter with Jessica took place three years ago at a Pop-up show in Bath, and more recently, we crossed paths again at the Fresh Art Fair in Cheltenham last year, where I was showcasing my work with The Sanctuary Gallery from Newnham. The gallery works with fascinating artists in a variety of media as you can see from her website.

‘We’re thrilled to be adding Sarah Boden to the Modern ArtBuyer portfolio. When I first visited Sarah’s studio, her uplifting energy for painting and passion for recapturing memories from her past was very evident, so it’s impressive and inspiring to recognise that same spirit so clearly in her work. Her paintings feel joyous and alive, and I’m excited to introduce her work to my clients and see her practice develop over the coming years.’

Residing abroad proved to be an adventurous journey, where the chance to showcase my work often depended on creating my own opportunities. We frequently found ourselves as newcomers in unfamiliar and unpredictable countries, navigating the challenges of making new friends, establishing contacts, and securing a place to live. The transition from the lively and outgoing atmosphere of Andalucia in Spain to the more reserved Basel, Switzerland represented a significant cultural shift. Overcoming the language barrier, as I struggled with Swiss German and High German from my school days, posed its own set of challenges.

Initially, I spent weeks researching the area for art shows, eventually discovering the Expat Expo, a prestigious exhibition hosted in a grand conference hall adorned with 15-meter-high ceilings and chandeliers. At that time, I specialised in selling mixed media, contemporary watercolours and ink sketches of Basel, gaining popularity among clients such as Roche and Novartis. Following two days of networking and numerous cups of coffee, my fellow exhibitor extended an invitation for me to showcase my work in her gallery located in the heart of Basel. This opportunity led to a year-long stint as an artist in residence where I met many local artists and clients.

Since returning to the UK in 2017, I have realised just how much the art world has changed here and it has taken a little time to find contacts and start to build a new art business. Thank you for reading this far and I hope you will continue to follow and see where this takes us.

I must thank Jessica for all her help in providing the information for this post and I look forward to working together.
